Study to shew thyself approved unto God

Have you ever searched for something precious you misplaced—perhaps your car keys when you were running late, or a cherished family keepsake? You drop everything. You turn over cushions, look under tables, and shine light into every dark corner. You search with singular focus because what you lost matters to you.

What if we approached God’s Word with that exact same intensity?

When we open our Bibles, we aren't just reading pages in a book—we are digging for the deep, life-giving treasure of God’s own heart. Deepening our faith doesn't happen by accident; it takes intentionality, focus, and a heart hungry for truth.

Seeking Wisdom Like Hidden Treasure

In Proverbs 2:1–5, we are given a powerful picture of what eager, intentional study looks like:

"My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding… if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God."

Notice the action words: accept, store up, turn your ear, apply your heart, look, search.

The Apostle Paul echoed this when writing to young Timothy:

"Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth." (2 Timothy 2:15)

God isn't asking us to earn His love through study—His grace is already freely given! But He calls us to handle His truth with care, reverence, and loving focus.

Moving from Milk to Solid Food

Diligence in God’s Word isn't about collecting trivia to win a game or sound smart around christian friends. It is the vital spiritual food that helps us grow into mature followers of Jesus.

The writer of Hebrews gently reminds us of this need to mature:

"In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil." (Hebrews 5:12–14)

Living on "milk" is natural when we are new in our faith, but our Heavenly Father longs to see us grow up strong, grounded, and able to navigate life's challenges with wisdom.

Four Ways to Deepen Your Walk This Week

How do we move from casual reading to deep, life-changing immersion in Scripture? Here are four practical habits to lean into:

  • Consistency: Make quiet time with God a non-negotiable part of your routine. Psalm 1:2 speaks of the joy found in meditating on God’s law "day and night." Even 10 faithful minutes a day will transform your heart over time.

  • Prayerful Dependence: Never open your Bible without asking the Holy Spirit to open your eyes. If you feel stuck or confused, remember James 1:5: "If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you."

  • Community and Accountability: We were never meant to walk this road alone. Look at the Bereans in Acts 17:11—they examined the Scriptures together every day! Join a small group Bible study.

  • Application: The ultimate goal of learning is living! As James 1:22 reminds us, "Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says." Ask yourself after every passage: How does this change how I love my family, others around me, and my enemy today?

A Promise for Your Journey

I know life gets busy. Between work, family, and endless distractions, sitting down to study can feel like extra work. But I want to promise you this: time spent at the feet of Jesus is never wasted.

"A sluggard’s appetite is never filled, but the desires of the diligent are fully satisfied." (Proverbs 13:4)

When you lean in with a open, diligent heart, God fills you up. You will find a steady peace, a sharper discernment, and a joy that circumstance cannot shake.
